Chinese Language

China is a huge country and its people speak different kinds of languages and dialects. The Chinese languages belong to the Sino Tibetan family. Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in China. The other languages which are very commonly spoken in China are Wu, Cantonese and Min. The Standard Mandarin or the Beijing dialect is the most widely spoken language. Standard Cantonese is another very popular language of China, which is also spoken in many other parts of South East Asia.

The Chinese people have a pictographic script and the characters have evolved from pictures of different things, human beings and animals. The words in China are represented by one character. In the first half of the 20th century, there was a language revolution in China as the written form of spoken Mandarin evolved. In the Chinese dictionaries there are fifty six thousand characters among which the knowledge of 3000 characters is absolutely necessary to understand the language. The knowledge of 6000 characters will help you in understanding literature and technical writing.
